The Capitals continued with their coaching changes today. The Caps announced today that Assistant Head Coaches Kevin McCarthy and Blaine Forsythe. McCarthy had joined the Capitals in 2020 when Peter Laviolette was hired as the head coach. Forsythe has been a mainstay in the organization since he came on board in 2006-2007. Forsythe, who started out as the Capitals video coach, worked his way up to eventually being an assistant coach. Forsythe has been in charge of the Capitals power play since 2013, and for a majority of the time had been a huge part of the Capitals success. This was evident during the Cup run as the power play came up with big goals down the stretch to win it all.
However, things do end up becoming stale and outdated. The power play struggled, and struggled, and got almost unwatchable at times. The power play doesn’t have to be automatic, but needs to be more creative and at least somewhat consistent. Forsythe definitely gets a lot of hate, but when things work you don’t mess with success. That is why I believe that is why the Power Play struggled. Yes, you should feed the guy on the left circle with 822 goals, but that can’t be your only option.
McCarthy has been with Laviolette since their days in Carolina. They won a cup together and got close when they were in Philadelphia and Nashville. I don’t have much of an opinion on McCarthy, but it felt like the defense was inconsistent from time-to-time. The defense struggled this year as John Carlson missed a majority of the new year with a head injury he suffered in a win against Winnipeg. It seemed that Darcy was getting shelled left and right and had to stand on his head for the Caps to win games.
Also announced was that Assistant coach Scott Allen, Goal tending coach Scott Murray, and Video coaches Brett Leonhardt and Emily Engel-Natzke will return.
