Capitals finish road trip victorious against Flyers 4-1

December 8, 2022 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Washington Capitals finally finished their six-game road swing in Philadelphia against the injury riddled Flyers. Overcoming a sluggish first period, the Caps managed to come away with the win.

Washington began the game very much looking like a team at the end of a long road trip–sloppy and out of sync. They also only mustered four shots on goal. And most frustrating of all, they had little to no net front presence compared to their previous game. Their lack of energy would contribute to two hooking calls against them, the second of which led to a power play goal. Kevin Hayes buried the wrister at 15:46 to give the Flyers the lead.

The second period began much the same, but the road team would eventually find some reserve energy to sustain them. After failing miserably to produce a result in their first power play chances in the first period, the Capitals converted on their third chance at 3:51 of the second. TJ Oshie slammed home his fifth of the season from his usual position in the high slot. Their shot total reached 12 for the period.

The third period began with both teams increasing their efforts. Dylan Strome broke the tie after tipping in a John Carlson point shot at 9:19. The goal would be enough to hold off the Flyers for the rest of the game. The Capitals would finish with 27 shots on goal. Alex Ovechkin would seal the game with a pair of empty net goals, raising his season total to 15. Charlie Lindgren would backstop the Caps to 29 saves.

NOTES–Ovechkin’s two goals give him 795 total for his career as well as 51 empty net goals. The Capitals have now won back-to-back games four times this season. The Capitals come home for a tilt against the Seattle Kraken, scheduled for a 7 PM ET start time.
