Capitals re-sign Rasmus Sandin to a five-year contract

March 6, 2024 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Rasmus Sandin to a five-year contract that has an average value of $4.6 million. Sandin was acquired last season from Toronto and is only 23 years old.

Sandin has stayed healthy through most of the season and has three goals and 17 assists along with a -9 rating. Sandin sees a lot of ice time every game. The Capitals are working to extend their younger core players and Sandin fits into that.

I would like to see more production out of Sandin but he is a puck moving defenseman with a good skill set. Sandin is still young and still has room from improvement.

Here is the Capitals press release.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Rasmus Sandin to a five-year contract extension, president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Sandin’s contract will carry an average annual value of $4.6 million.
Sandin, who turns 24 on March 7, has recorded 20 points (3g, 17a) in 52 games this season. The 5’11”, 189-pound defenseman ranks second on the Capitals in ice time per game (21:19), which marks a single-season career high. Among Capitals defensemen, Sandin ranks second in goals, assists and points and third in blocked shots (85).
Sandin, who recorded 15 points (3g, 12a) in 19 games with Washington last season after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Feb. 28, 2023, set career highs in games played (71), goals (7), assists (28) and points (35) in 2022-23, more than doubling his previous career-high point total. Since making his Capitals debut on March 4, 2023, Sandin ranks tied for first among Washington blueliners in goals (6) and second in games played (71), assists (29), points (35), power-play points (9) and ice time per game (21:46)
Sandin was selected by Toronto in the first round (29th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. In 211 career NHL games with Washington and Toronto, Sandin has recorded 83 points (16g, 67a). Among defensemen in his draft class, Sandin ranks sixth in even-strength points (62), seventh in games played and assists and eighth in points.
Internationally, Sandin has represented Sweden at the 2023 IIHF World Championship and the 2019 and 2020 World Junior Championships, earning a bronze medal in 2020. The Uppsala, Sweden native recorded 10 points (3g, 7a) in seven games during the 2020 tournament, which led all defensemen and was named the tournament’s top defenseman.
