Charlie Lindgren Signs

The 28-year-old Lindgren posted a 5-0-0 record with a 1.22 GAA and a .958 save percentage last year with the Blues. Lindgren spent most of last year in the AHL with the Springfield Thunderbirds. There he posted a 24-7-1 with three shutouts, a 2.21 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage. He ranked third in the AHL in goals-against average, second in save percentage and tied for fourth in wins last season.

Lindgren originally signed with the Montreal Canadiens as an undrafted free agent in 2016. With the Habs, Lindgren played in 24 games between 2016 to 2020. In his career, Lindgren has a 15-12-2 record with two shutouts, a 2.74 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage.

Prior to entering the NHL, Lindgren played for St. Cloud State University. In three seasons he amassed a 51-29-3 record with a 2.21 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and eight shutouts in 88 games. In 2016 he was named an NCHC First All-Star Team, the NCAA (West) First All-American Team and named NCHC Goaltender of the Year.

What This Means

The Capitals reshaped their goaltending this off-season but letting Ilya Samsonov leave via free agency and trading Vitek Vanecek and signing Lingren and Stanley Cup champion Darcy Kuemper. The Capitals are banking on Lindgren being able to carry the full load as a backup this year. He has put up decent numbers in his career but has never been able to lock down a permanent NHL position. With the commitment by the Capitals, however, it looks like he has found a place.
