Today, Nicklas Backstrom met with general manager Brian MacLellan today to discuss his future with the team. He had hip resurfacing surgery back in the summer of 2022 and while the surgery was a success, he hasn’t been able to get back to his old form. He has gone from being a top line center to third line center, which isn’t the best use of his talent as he is not a physical player and more of a skill/finesse player. Backstrom has played his entire career in Washington since being drafted in 2006. Backstrom’s stats compared to the history of the organization are as follows. Backstrom is also the franchise’s career leader in assists (762) in addition to being second in games played (1,105) and points (1,033) behind Alexander Ovechkin. Backstrom is expected to miss the remainder of the season and the team is expected to use Connor McMichael in his absence.
