Key Players

In Brown, the Capitals get a hard-nosed, dependable right winger. This season, he scored 10 goals and 29 assists for 39 points, adding 10 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 49.4 percent Corsi For and a relative Corsi of +3.3. Those totals are similar when compared to last season, where he scored 21 goals and 14 assists for 35 points. Over his seven-year NHL career, Brown has played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators. In that time, he has 90 goals and 126 assists for 216 career points in 444 career games. He was originally drafted from the Erie Otters in the sixth round, 156th overall of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs.

What This Means for the Future

Connor Brown is a nice addition to any team’s bottom six, and the Capitals will be glad to have him. The two-time 20-goal man plays hard in the corners and kills penalties efficiently. In 2020-21, Brown added five short-handed goals. Additionally, he helped Ottawa to a 13th place finish in penalty kill percentage, just one spot below Washington, despite not being as good defensively at five-on-five. Washington’s team goals against was 3.0 per game, compared with Ottawa’s 3.2. Furthermore, this season for Ottawa, he played 20:03 per game, an impressive amount for any forward.

The Ottawa Senators trade of Connor Brown signifies they are happy with the moves they have made thus far. These moves include trading for Alex DeBrincat and signing Claude Giroux. With some younger players, like Shane Pinto or Parker Kelly, among others, looking to fill out bottom-six roles, Brown became expendable. Also, this was a way for the Senators to re-stock their draft pick supply after the Debrincat trade, and moving on from Matt Murray skimmed it out a bit.

This trade should pay dividends for both teams. Brown will jump into the Capital lineup and on the penalty kill, and help give them some grit come spring hockey. Ottawa also benefited from this transaction, as they have more ice-time available for their prospects to develop. The reason this is so relevant is as a result of the recent additions, the team can do this in low-pressure situations.
