Andrew Mangiapane Signed by the Edmonton Oilers

Mangiapane has played for the Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals across his eight-year NHL career. The 29-year-old netted 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in 81 games this season. Mangiapane averaged 13 minutes and two seconds of ice time this season. He had a Corsi for of 55.0 and a relative Corsi of 6.4.

The Toronto native has 123 goals and 120 assists for 243 points in 498 career games. Calgary was originally drafted in the sixth round, 166th overall of the 2015 NHL Draft. He had a strong major junior career with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.

Mangiapane had a career-best 35 goals in the 2021-22 season with the Flames. He also notched a career-best in points that same season with 55.

The forward has also represented Canada at the international level. He was the most valuable player at the 2021 IIHF World Championships and helped lead Team Canada to gold in that tournament. Mangiapane was also a member of the 2024 team that placed fourth.

What It Means

The veteran winger may not have another 30-plus goal season in him. However, he can stull be a useful player on a roster. That 35-goal season was an outlier, but he can be counted on to get double-digit goals in a season.

Mangiapane came over from the Flames in a trade last summer. The Capitals did make the Stanley Cup Playoffs and won the Metropolitan Division. However, he only recorded one goal and one assist for two points in 10 post-season games.

The veteran could still help a team out in a middle-six role. This signing could be an underrated one.
