Washington Capitals Sign Another Goalie

March 3, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL rumours; Charlie Lindgren signed

The Washington Capitals have locked up the second part of their goalie tandem. News emerged on Monday morning that the Capitals have gotten Charlie Lindgren signed to a new deal. This pact is a three-year deal worth a total of $9 million. Lindgren’s deal has an average cap hit of $3 million per season and runs until the end of the 2027-28 season. Washington may have signed one goalie already. However, they nail down both parts of the duo with this move.

Capitals announce they’ve signed goalie Charlie Lindgren to a three-year, $9 million contract extension. He was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Washington Capitals Gets Charlie Lindgren Signed to New Deal

Lindgren has played for the Montreal Canadiens, St Louis Blues and the Capitals across his nine-year NHL career. The Lakeville, Minnesota native has a 13-10-3 mark with a 2.70 goals-against-average and a .896 save percentage. He also has a shutout this season for the Capitals.

The 31-year-old has a career mark of 66-49-16 with a 2.77 GAA and a .906 save percentage. Montreal originally signed him as an undrafted free agent after a standout career at St. Cloud State of the NCAA.

He’s also represented his native country on the international level. Lindgren was a member of the Team USA squad at the 2024 IIHF World Championships. The Americans finished fifth in that tournament and Lindgren amassed a 1-1 record with a 2.03 GAA.

He is also the brother of the Ryan Lindgren, who was recently acquired by the Colorado Avalanche. It’s been a busy weekend for both brothers. However, this is a signing and not a trade.

What It Means

The Capitals have shored up their goalie situation it seems. Some were wondering what Lindgren’s future would be with Logan Thompson signing a deal. However, it seems that general manager Chris Patrick is going with a two-headed monster.

Thompson may be getting the bulk of starts as of late. However, Lindgren has more than earned his keep as a steady backup. Lindgren may seemingly be the backup, but he can step up if Thompson does get hurt or needs a break.

Washington has been playing well this season and goaltending his been a big part of that. Lindgren seems to be part of the plan for the near future.
