Women’s basketball welcomes new assistant coach

April 26, 2022 by GW Hatchet

GW announced Friday that an assistant women’s basketball coach from Kennesaw State will join the Colonials coaching staff next season.

The women’s basketball team hired Sherill Baker as an assistant coach and recruitment coordinator after she served in the same roles for three seasons at Kennesaw State, according to the release. The release states Baker has developed two of the premier women’s basketball talents in the ASUN during her time at Kennesaw State, including First Team All-ASUN honoree Kamiyah Street and freshman guard Amani Johnson who won 2018-19 ASUN Freshman of the Year.

“I’m extremely excited to welcome Sherill to Foggy Bottom,” Head Coach Caroline McCombs said in the press release. “She has an unmatched passion for recruiting, connecting people and for the development of young women through the game of basketball. She has competed at the highest levels as a player, and will share that drive and experience with our team.”

Baker compiled 1,665 points throughout her career for Georgia, where she held single-season and career records for steals with 149 and 426, respectively. She received several accolades in 2006, including All-American and All-SEC First Team honors and National Defensive Player of the Year.

She was named SEC Legend at the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2014. After her graduating in 2006, she was selected in the WNBA draft by the New York Liberty, spending four years in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and Indiana during her professional career.

Baker competed in Israel, Italy, France, Germany and Cyprus while she played in the WNBA, averaging points in the double figures each year.

She compiled a 93-39 record with four-straight NCAA tournament appearances during her career, where she helped the Lady Bulldogs to the Sweet 16s and an Elite Eight appearance.

The Athletic Department did not return a request for comment on behalf of Baker.
