A pair of former Big East basketball guards have reportedly both passed away after contracting and battling coronavirus.
Lee Green, who played at St. John’s from 1991-94 and Dave Edwards, who began his college career at Georgetown before transferring to Texas A&M, died on Monday according to multiple reports. Both men appear to have been in their 40s.
Ron Linfonte, the Director of Sports Medicine, shared news of Green’s passing on Twitter. A high school All-American, Green was a member of a pair of NCAA Tournament teams while at SJU.
“A Parade All-American who played 3 years at #SJUBB Lee was our warrior on those teams,” Linfonte wrote. “A true lock em up defender that relished shutting down the best opponents.”
Edwards, a star point guard out of New York City, played at Georgetown during the 1989-90 season. He was a key bench contributor for the Hoyas, but ultimately wound up transferring to Texas A&M, where he became an All-Southwest Conference performer.
Stacey Davis of NYCHoops and Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones each tweeted that Edwards succumbed to COVID-19.
The deaths of Green and Edwards are harsh reminders of how horrific this disease is. Everyone please stay safe.
