Ed Cooley Reportedly Schedules Old Big East Rival for Home-and-Home Series

Georgetown will reportedly play at Notre Dame this year, host next year

Your Georgetown Hoyas will reportedly start a home-and-home series with old Big East rival the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, starting next season in South Bend. The Hoyas are 16-13 lifetime against Notre Dame and haven’t faced the Irish since the 2012-13 season. It appears that Ed Cooley picked up the phone and called another new coach in Micah Shrewsberry to firm up his scheduling.

Like Georgetown, Notre Dame is trying to get back to a winning basketball program. It’s hard to say whether prior coaches would have scheduled an ACC basketball program for the nonconference, especially given the level of rebuild expected, but the news does feel like a breath of fresh air.

No dates have been announced, but a December meeting seems likely as Cooley prepares the Hoyas for the BIG EAST season.

As far as other scheduling news, we have heard:

• Georgetown will visit Rutgers on November 15 as part of the Gavitt Games (BIG EAST and Big Ten)
• Georgetown will reportedly host Jackson State on November 25 (per Hilltop Hoops)
• Georgetown will host TCU on Saturday, December 2 as part of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle
• Georgetown will host Syracuse on Saturday, December 9
• Georgetown will reportedly host a multi-team event featuring Mount St. Mary’s and American (dates TBA)
• Georgetown will reportedly visit Notre Dame.

Georgetown and Notre Dame will start a home-and-home series next season in South Bend, multiple sources told College Hoops Today.

There will be a return game in Washington D.C. during the 2024-25 season.

Official dates are currently TBD.

Georgetown is entering its first season under Ed Cooley while Notre Dame is entering its first season under Micah Shrewsberry.

Cooley and Shrewsberry previously coached at Providence and Penn State respectively.

The two teams faced each other in the old Big East Conference before the original league disbanded [NB: wtf?] after the 2012-13 season. The Hoyas stayed in the Big East while Notre Dame joined the ACC.

This year’s matchup will be the 30th between the two teams in history. Georgetown holds the current advantage with 16 wins and 13 losses. The Hoyas have a record of 8-5 at home and the Fighting Irish have an 8-6 record at home.
