The basketball world will mourn the loss of a beloved coach and player

Georgetown has announced the passing of assistant coach Louis Orr, 64, through a family statement.

A STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY OF LOUIS ORR
On 12/15/2022, Louis Orr was called home to be with the Lord as his battle with cancer has come to an end. He was a dearly loved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will forever be missed! pic.twitter.com/VPn8AO1kSn

Louis Orr joined the Patrick Ewing’s staff as an assistant coach in June 2017 and moved into the role of special assistant to the head coach prior to the 2022-23 season. At the time of the transition, Ewing referred to it as “taking Coach Orr off the road,” likely hinting at potential health concerns in hindsight.

I’ve lost a great friend. Someone who has been in my life since I was 22 years old. We developed a friendship and a brotherhood. He was always someone I could talk to – we would talk about life, we would talk about basketball, we would talk about family.

Hired soon after Ewing’s appointment in 2017, Orr was Ewing’s teammate on the New York Knicks and had extensive coaching experience as a head coach at three different schools (Seton Hall, Bowling Green and Siena) and as an assistant at Xavier, Providence and Syracuse, his alma mater.

Up until his change in position for Georgetown, Orr was recruiting very well and was beloved by the team. Last January, Orr took the reins for Georgetown while Patrick Ewing missed time due to COVID-19 protocols.

The basketball world will mourn the loss of Coach Orr who has positively impacted that game, touched lives of countless athletes, and conducted himself with dignity and class.
