Patrick Ewing is out as Georgetown’s head coach, the school announced Thursday afternoon. The Hoyas will now begin a national search for their next head coach.
“Patrick Ewing is the heart of Georgetown basketball,” Georgetown President John J. DeGioia said in a press release. “I am deeply grateful to Coach Ewing for his vision, his determination, and for all that he has enabled Georgetown to achieve.”
“Over these past six years, he was tireless in his dedication to his team and the young men he coached and we will forever be grateful to Patrick for his courage and his leadership in our Georgetown community.”
As a player, Ewing is arguably the Hoyas’ most decorated player. He led Georgetown to a national championship in 1984 and is the program’s leading rebounder and second-leading scorer. However, he did not have the same success as a coach, leading Georgetown to an overall record of 75-109 and just one winning season.
“I am very proud to be a graduate of Georgetown University,” Ewing said. “And I am very grateful to President DeGioia for giving me the opportunity to achieve my ambition to be a head basketball coach. It is particularly meaningful to me to be in charge of the basketball program at my alma mater.”
Specifically, this past season, Georgetown finished 7-25 with a 2-18 record in Big East play. At one point in 2022-23, the program had a 29-game conference losing streak that spilled over from previous season. In his final game, Ewing and Georgetown were defeated 80-48 at the hands of Villanova.
“I wish the program nothing but success,” Ewing said. “I will always be a Hoya.”
