As the once-proud Georgetown Hoyas basketball program continues to hit new lows, athletic director Lee Reed is taking the optimistic approach that coach Patrick Ewing can get things turned around.

In a statement released Wednesday, Reed expressed “confidence” in Ewing’s leadership moving forward.

“As a university with high standards for both academic and athletic excellence, we all share the disappointment of a difficult season,” Reed began.

“In this ever evolving landscape of college athletics we are committed to Coach Ewing,” the statement continues. “… We are working with him to evaluate every aspect of the men’s basketball program and to make the necessary changes for him to put us back on the path to success for next year.”

“Coach Ewing’s dedication as well as his success in last year’s Big East Tournament is a testament to his leadership,” Reed concluded. “This give us confidence that he can strengthen our program going forward.”

“I’m hoping I’ll be back and doing something that I love at a place that I love and getting us back to being the king of the hill,” Patrick Ewing said today, after Georgetown’s 18th straight loss https://t.co/nYYCKLml3J

Georgetown fell to UConn Sunday, marking a school-record 18 straight losses and the university’s first last-place finish in the Big East since the league began back in 1979.

Just 13 months ago, the Hoyas went a magical four-day run to make the NCAA tournament. As it stands now, Georgetown is 6-22 with a winless record in conference play.

Georgetown finishes the season against Seton Hall and Xavier. The legendary Hoyas figure will try to put a two-win silver lining at the end of the program’s losing cloud.
