Cooley Talks About Roles, Pace, & Perimeter in Post-Game Presser

Your Georgetown Hoyas (1-0) took down the lowly Le Moyne Dolphins and Hoyas fans got a glimpse at some of what Ed Cooley and his gang are trying to do with the athletes wearing blue and gray white. They saw sharing the ball, reasonable rotations, hustle, a fun breakaway alley-oop and … three players earning wrestling belts in a rarely seen Georgetown locker room! What a night.

With Cooley’s press conference, he (along with Supreme Cook and Dontrez Styles) emphasized a few keys including:

  1. players will know their roles and the strategy fits them, not them fitting a system,
  2. playing with pace is important based on their size and lineups right now,
  3. his teams endeavor to always be physical and unselfish because that’s what competing in the BIG EAST requires today,
  4. ball movement is fundamental and he thinks this will be a good perimeter shooting team, and
  5. going out of his way to point out Wayne Bristol’s hustle plays.

Cooley, of course, thanked the students and fans for a great atmosphere on opening night.

Georgetown Head Coach Ed Cooley: “Our students, our supporters, ticket holders — they need to know how much we appreciate them and how much we need them, and we feed off of them a lot.”

“Once I got to the game, I was OK,” Cooley said. “What was different was leaving the Thompson Center (on Georgetown’s campus). The traffic to get here. … The anxiety leading up to it: How will our men perform? It was very emotional, to be honest with you. Very, very emotional.”

Cook arrived at Georgetown following three seasons at Fairfield, where he started 73 games and totaled 910 points and 680 rebounds. Cook made 8 of 9 shots against Le Moyne. Styles spent two seasons at North Carolina, averaging 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.

Jay Heath also scored 15 points for Georgetown. Rowan Brumbaugh added 13 points, Drew Fielder scored 11 points and Jayden Epps had a team-high 11 assists. The Hoyas finished with a 52-29 edge on the glass, with Wayne Bristol Jr. grabbing 10 rebounds.

Georgetown opened an early 20-7 lead and pushed it to 47-23 at halftime.

Georgetown trounces Le Moyne to begin Ed Cooley era | FLM

The Hoyas led for all but 45 seconds and outshot the Dolphins 57.8 percent to 32.3 percent. Georgetown overpowered Le Moyne near the rim, outrebounding the Dolphins 52-29 and owning a 50-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Cook scored 14 of his points in the second half as the Hoyas built on their 24-point halftime cushion. His layup at the 13:31 mark gave Georgetown its first 30-point lead at 61-30.

The Hoyas spread the ball effectively in the game’s early stages. Six different scorers supplied Georgetown’s first seven baskets. Styles’ and-one grew the Hoyas’ lead to 20-7 at the 11-minute mark in the first half.

Le Moyne men’s basketball falls to Georgetown in Division I debut 94-57 | CNY Central

The historical moment for the Dolphins’ program was commemorated pregame, with Le Moyne President Linda LeMura presented with a game-ball prior to tip-off.

The Dolphins roster features nine transfers out of thirteen scholarship spots – meaning many of their players were not guaranteed a Division-I spot during their recruitment process with Le Moyne.

Senior Kayeim Cleary led the Dolphins with eleven points, 7 rebounds, and one assist. West Genesee High School alum Luke Sutherland also grabbed nine points and three rebounds.

Georgetown Wins Big on Cooley’s Opening Night | House-Enterprise

The Hoyas looked significantly better in game one under Ed Cooley than they did in any game last season under former coach Patrick Ewing.

A season ago, Georgetown averaged just under 12 assists per game as a team. On Tuesday night, they had 23 on 37 made shots, including 11 from Illinois transfer Jayden Epps.

The Hoyas outrebounded the Dolphins 52-29 and dominated inside, outscoring Le Moyne 50-22 in the paint.

Georgetown had two players finish with double-doubles in the game and five players finish in double-figures on the scoresheet.

Fairfield transfer Supreme Cook led all scorers in his Georgetown debut with 19 points on 8-9 shooting, hauling in 13 rebounds with 2 steals and a block as well.
