LINKS: Secret Scrimmage Rumors and New KenPom Rankings

Does beating Maryland and an 88th rank change anything?

Once again, it is less than a month out from start of the season and Georgetown fans are begging for any news or anecdote. No open intrasquad scrimmage, no charity exhibition, and no midnight madness hoopla.

Still, your Georgetown Hoyas may or may not have been involved in a not-so-secret scrimmage with the Maryland Terrapins, and the Twitter reports sound positive for the Hoyas. Also, a pretty favorable KenPom ranking was released today. The question becomes: are these whispers about “potential” going to be the peak of Georgetown’s 2024-25 season or will the Hoyas get our hopes even higher (before breaking our hearts)?

The scrimmage rumors further include that Georgetown hosted Maryland and won 68-64, while looking pretty solid throughout. It sounds as thought Jayden Epps sat out as a precautionary measure but Malik Mack stepped up with 19 points, 5 points, and 5 assists. Tweets also indicate that the Hoyas led by 18 and most of the game was comfortable, with Thomas Sorber and Jordan Burks with double-digit rebounds.

Georgetown Athletics had a solid weekend, with a 17-0 shutout against Patriot League foe Lafayette, No. 19 Men’s Soccer beating UConn 1-0 on the road, and two wins over American by the Swimming & Diving teams. The men’s golf team is hosting the 40th Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, New Jersey with about a dozen schools.

Things have been pretty positive on the Hilltop. In fact, Georgetown Men’s Basketball has a decent preseason Kenpom ranking, announced today, with an overall ranking of 88th with the 48th-ranked offense and the 138th-ranked defense. It would be a significant improvement over the 192 (96 Off / 321 Def) from last year.

Such a rating appears to give the Hoyas decent chances at beating some upcoming opponents in Notre Dame (69th), West Virginia (87th), and Syracuse (68th). The rest of the nonconference lineup looks bleak with a post-Thanksgiving game against Albany leading the rankings at 237.

  • Wed Nov 6 – Lehigh – 264
  • Sat Nov 9 – Fairfield – 241
  • Sat Nov 16 – Notre Dame – 69
  • Wed Nov 20 – Mount St. Mary’s – 266
  • Sat Nov 23 – Saint Francis – 350
  • Tue Nov 26 – Wagner – 269
  • Sat Nov 30 – Albany – 237
  • Mon Dec 2 – UMBC – 281
  • Fri Dec 6 – West Virginia – 87
  • Sat Dec 14 – Syracuse – 68
  • Sat Dec 28 – Coppin St. – 363

Looking at the BIG EAST rankings on KenPom (AdjEM, below), everyone but Seton Hall (91) and DePaul (166) outranks the Hoyas (88). I’m not sure what SHU did to piss Ken off.

As a national team coach, nurturing relationships with players is , even in the short time you have with them. It helps them stay proud to represent their country and believe in you.

How big of a step can Georgetown take in year 2 under Ed Cooley? ⬜️

Malik Mack/Micah Peavy is a super fun punch alongside Jayden Epps, but this is still a very young team with plenty of unknowns

Butler comes in at ninth in the Big East, 87th overall, seven spots behind Seton Hall. Georgetown comes in 14 spots behind at 101, tenth in the conference.

Jahmyl Telfort comes in as the 43rd-ranked player in the conference, which is FAR too low https://t.co/HopBSI9ncT
