Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Al Golden is reportedly on his way to South Bend. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel tweeted that Notre Dame is finalizing a deal with Golden to be the next defensive coordinator at Notre Dame under Marcus Freeman.
Per Thamel, “Al Golden has accepted the job to become Notre Dame’s new [DC]. He’s agreed to a three-year deal, which may take a few days to finalize.”

Golden was widely believed to be the frontrunner to land the job. And now it appears Golden will be a Golden Domer for at least the next three years.
Al Golden takes over Marcus Freeman’s previous title as Notre Dame’s DC. Freeman was hired as the Fighting Irish’s next head coach after Brian Kelly bolted for LSU and the SEC.
ND’s latest hire brings a good deal of experience to an otherwise young, up-and-coming staff. Golden’s last stint as a DC came back in the early 2000’s with the Virginia Cavaliers. Followed by a couple of head coaching stays with Temple and Miami.
#Bengals DE Sam Hubbard talks about LBs coach Al Golden; also his relationship with Notre Dame:
“He’s a brilliant coach, great with relationships and people. He’s obviously had experience recruiting. The sky’s the limit for a guy like Al.”#SuperBowl #RuleItAll #RuleTheJungle pic.twitter.com/lkr1cSS5pF

In 2015, Golden moved up to the NFL ranks. It’s there where he worked with the Lions and Bengals as a tight ends coach and LB’s coach, respectively.
A former Penn State TE, Golden finds himself now coaching for Notre Dame, the team he helped send packing back in 1990; knocking the Irish off their No. 1 ranking.
