The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly on the verge of bringing franchise legend Albert Pujols back for the 2022 season.
Pujols, one of the greatest players in franchise history, has been gone from St. Louis for more than a decade. He played for the Cardinals from 2001-11 before leaving for the Angels in free agency.
The future Hall of Famer has since played for the Angels (2012-21) and the Dodgers (2021).
Pujols, 42, is currently a free agent. However, the Cardinals are reportedly considering a free agent deal.
The Cardinals have had increased conversations with three-time MVP Albert Pujols, and interest is growing in bringing back the former Cardinal for the 2022 season, multiple sources familiar with the situation tell The Athletic.

The National League will have a designated hitter in 2022, so there could be a spot for Pujols in the lineup.
“Look, we will be the first to say why this doesn’t make sense for the team. But, after all that is said, I can’t pretend like I wouldn’t be incredibly excited to see Albert Pujols as a Cardinal again, even if we have to employ O’Neill to carry him around the bases after each hit,” one fan tweeted.
“Make. It. Happen,” another fan wrote.
“Why not? What a story it would be for Albert, Yadi, and Wainwright to go out together,” another fan added.
“He comes back home, hits his 700th, retires. Cut end scene,” another fan added.
The 2022 MLB season is set to begin in less than two weeks.
