On Wednesday morning, college football analyst Danny Kanell raised a common concern among college football fans.
He thinks preseason rankings are useless. The complaint comes after UCLA took down former No. 16 LSU over the weekend and moved up to No. 16 in the latest AP Poll.
Kanell thinks UCLA should be much higher in the rankings based solely on their performance so far this season. To him, the Bruins would be ranked much higher if they had been ranked to start the season.
“UCLA is ranked 16 in the AP Poll,” Kanell said on Twitter this morning. “The only reason they’re not significantly higher is because they weren’t ranked in the preseason. Voters are scared to move them too high. Reason number 4,379 why the preseason rankings are ridiculously dumb.”

UCLA opened the 2021 season with an impressive performance against Hawaii. Chip Kelly and the Bruins cruised to a 44-10 win and set up a key date against the LSU Tigers last weekend.
Despite LSU entering as the only ranked team, it was clear that the Bruins were going to be a tough out for the Tigers from the opening whistle. UCLA proved to be too much for LSU en route to a 38-27 victory.
UCLA gets the weekend off before a tough game against Fresno State next weekend. The Bruins won’t face off against a ranked team until early October against Arizona State – should the Sun Devils avoid a loss until then.
