It’s been over a month since New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left Bill Belichick’s side to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. With his position still unfilled after all this time, there’s rumors as to what Belichick has planned.
According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, it’s believed that Belichick himself might call the offensive plays this year. If nothing else, Belichick is expected to be more hands-on with the offense this coming year.
“There is an open belief league-wide that coach Bill Belichick could call the plays or, at the very least, have more involvement in the offense. He’s involved in everything, to be sure, but he could really dig in here,” Fowler recently wrote, via Bleacher Report.
McDaniels took several of Belichick’s top offensive assistants with him to Las Vegas. Patriots offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo, wide receivers coach Mick Lombardi and quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree have all left and.
Bricillo and Hardegree haven’t even been formally replaced yet.
“I don’t have any doubt that he’s going to meet the challenge head on.”

Bill Belichick made his bones coaching defense but his knowledge of offense and player development is vast. It wouldn’t be a shock if he calls the offensive plays in 2022 as he develops someone already on his staff into that kind of role.
The Patriots are a team that are hard to get a proper read on. While they were able to make the playoffs in 2021, they were effortlessly bounced out of the Wild Card round by the Buffalo Bills.
They may be ready to win a title now, but they might also be undergoing a mini-rebuild. It’s hard to tell sometimes.
Will Belichick have a bigger role in the offense this coming year?
