The Tigers have had an up and down year so far in many different aspects. Wins are normally followed by a loss or 2 and rarely have they been able to string together multiple wins. This most recent contest was a microcosm of their season: some good offense but turning the ball over and struggling to stop opposing offenses.
The Spiders struck early as they took a 6-0 lead on a passing touchdown from Camden Coleman to Landon Ellis. They followed it up with a Sean O’Haire field goal to make it 9-0. The Tigers responded with a 1 yard touchdown run from Devin Matthews to cap off a long drive. Landon Ellis hit pay-dirt again with a 10 yard touchdown reception from Camden Coleman. Keegan Vaughn added a field goal before half to make it 16-10. O’Haire added another field goal to put the Spiders up 9 in the 3rd quarter. Tyrell Greene added another rushing touchdown for the Tigers to make it 17-19. O’Haire added yet another field goal to go up 17-22. Then disaster struck for the Tigers, as Sean Brown threw a 90 yard pick-six to make it 29-17 late in the 3rd. The 4th was very back and forth as Sean Brown hit John Dunmore for a 80 yard touchdown reception to pull within 5 at 24-29. O’Haire capped the Spiders scoring with 2 more field goals to make the final score 35-24.
Sean Brown had some good moments during the day as he went 18-30 for 275 yards and a long touchdown pass. He did turn the ball over and has 6 of them on the season. He had a hard time getting going with him being sacked 7 times by the Spider defense. The run game had some difficulty getting going but both Devin Matthews and Tyrell Greene Jr both found the endzone. John Dumore had 123 yards receiving on 6 catches and had the long touchdown.
Camden Coleman had a solid day for the Spiders. He completed 17 of 26 passes for 230 yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back Zach Palmer-Smith carried the rock for 98 yards on 20 attempts. Jerry Garcia Jr had 110 yards receiving on 4 catches. Landon Ellis has a big day with 3 receptions for 45 yards and 2 scores.
The Towson defense struggled to get stops throughout the day. They did get a forced fumble from Evan Rutkowski. Xavier Terry led the team in tackles with 11. Rodney Roane and Dion Crews-Harris both recorded sacks.
The Spiders defense had a huge day and practically lived in the Tiger backfield. Jeremiah Grant had 3 sacks and forced 2 fumbles on the day. Matei Fitz, Camden Byrd and Carsen Stocklinski all had a sack each. Jabril Hayes, who recovered a fumble also housed a 90 yard INT.
The Tigers now turn their attention to the Pirates of Hampton University. This one will be a home game for Towson as it is a salute to veterans with Veterans Day on Monday. The Pirates have had a much better season than they have had in years past. Under center for the Pirates is Malcom Mays. Mays has been superb for Hampton this year with 784 yards passing and 9 touchdowns to 1 INT. He has also added 2 on the ground but seems to be much more of a passing QB. Their running backs have had a ton of success on the year: Elijah Burris, Ja’Quan Snipes, and Tymere Robinson have all had multiple rushing touchdowns on the season.
The receiving game has a few guys who can do some damage. Brennan Ridley, Dorrian Moultrie and Kymari Gray are all guys who can stench the field for the Pirates.
Defensively the Pirates are a well rounded unit. Amie Nance is a big body up front that has 4.5 sacks on the season. Jordan White and Trey Everett both have an INT on the season and will look to take the ball away from Sean Brown and Co. Will Hicks and Jayden Whaley both are great defenders of the ball and will look to continue their great secondary play. With the amount of talent in that secondary Brown is gonna have to play well in order for the Tigers to come out on top. Kickoff from Unitas Stadium is set for 1 pm. GO TIGERS
