Six defensive players earning all-conference accolades is the most for Maryland in nine years.
The Big Ten on Tuesday released all-conference honors for football players on defense and special teams, and seven Maryland players garnered accolades.
Defensive back Tarheeb Still was Maryland’s sole second-team selection, named by the league’s coaches. The coaches also voted linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II to the third team.
Five Terps were All-Big Ten honorable mentions: safety Beau Brade (voted by the media and coaches), linebacker Jaishawn Barham (coaches), defensive lineman Quashon Fuller (coaches), cornerback Ja’Quan Sheppard (coaches) and kick returner Braeden Wisloski (media).
Six defensive players earning all-conference accolades is the most for Maryland since 2014.
Barham, Brade and Still have previously earned All-Big Ten honors, with Barham and Brade doing so in back-to-back years. Sheppard has previously been named to an all-conference team while at Cincinnati, being included on the All-AAC first team a season ago. Fuller and Wisloski are first-time recipients of all-league honors.
Still led the Terps with five interceptions, making him one of only 15 players in FBS to have at least five interceptions this season. His 45 tackles were most among Maryland’s cornerbacks. Meanwhile, Hyppolite’s 62 tackles ranked second on the team, and he added 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Brade and Barham and Fuller helped spur Maryland’s defensive front and combined for six sacks, while Brade and Sheppard played pivotal roles in the Terps’ secondary. Brade led the team in tackles (72) and the defensive back duo combined for 13 pass breakups.
Wisloski, a freshman, was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week early in the season after returning a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against Virginia on Sept. 15. He totaled 353 return yards this season.
Note: The Big Ten will release All-Big Ten teams and individual awards for players on offense on Wednesday, Nov. 29. This story will be updated.
