Aki Basho: Day 4 results, insight, and current standings

September 15, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

Hokutofuji loses, Atamifuji looks like a threat, Hoshoryu’s spirit broken through the last 2, and have Tamawashi and Aoiyama finally run out of gas?

Another day, another spirited time of sumo wrestling as day 4 of the Aki Basho continues in Tokyo at the Kokugikan.

For Tamawashi, he dropped to 0-4, leading to speculation that the soon-to-be 39-year-old is probably out of gas and it may be time to retire. Tamawashi, again is off to another rough start and probably on just fumes at this point. He has recovered from starts like this in the past but he is getting very routinely beaten.

Aoiyama has led tourney-goers to believe that this may be it for him as he is off to an 0-4 start following today’s loss to Daishoho. His head coach says that he’s not interested in going back down to Division 2 Juryo and is prepared to just walk away while the getting is good.

Atamifuji on the other hand, who is the defending Division 2 Juryo champion, and is wrestling in the Division 1 tournament advanced to 4-0 with his win today over Chiyoshoma. “I’m just focused what’s in front of me. If I do lose, it comes with the territory, I guess,” says Atamifuji, “Just bringing the entertainment to our great fans.”

Hoshoryu is now 1-3 after a surprise loss to then 0-3 Shodai. Shodai made pretty standard work of Hoshoryu in the victory. “I didn’t expect to win but I did,” said Shodai, “It’s been a long road this last few tournaments.”

We also had a first in nearly 6 years as 8 different kimarite were used in the first matches before there was a repeat kimarite used to win.
