Aki Basho: Day 5 results, insight, and current standings

September 14, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

All 3 of the leaders tied at 4-0 lose, marking a first in 23 years in which all the leaders lost their perfect marks at the end of the 5th day

Well, we had a shocking development in Day 5 of the Aki Basho as it continues at the Koukgikan in Tokyo. All 3 leaders who were 4-0 going into Day 5 were losers (Atamifuji, Onosho, and Kinbozan) in their respective matches. Hakkaku, the chairman of Sumo, was surprised as well. “I think we probably have the most competitive set of wrestlers in this tournament.” Kinbozan was taken down by Endo, who has now beaten more wrestlers with a perfect record of 3-0 or higher, than any other wrestler. Meisei is right behind him. “Kinbozan, I don’t believe gave his best efforts because that’s not like him,” said Endo, “It felt a bit too easy, he seemed somewhat off.”

Atamifuji had the rug pulled up from under him against Tsurugisho, who improved to 4-1 himself. “All a matter of skill, he pushed, but I didn’t let him get to me,” said Tsurugisho, “fun win for myself.” Tsurugisho is set to take leave from sumo next month (fall tour) in order to spend a few weeks with family.

Hoshoryu on the other hand, feeling much better following his win against winless Tamawashi. “Tamawashi is a legend but I am starting to wonder if he’s beginning to run out of steam,” said Hoshoryu, “I mean, it’s one thing to continue on until you’re 40 and go for the record but on the same level, if you’re not doing enough to win at an advanced age, might be time to go into coaching.” Tamawashi has long planned to become a coach but at the same time open up a bakery in town. He’s the only winless competitor remaining.
