A Baltimore Police patrol officer facing rape and assault charges over his alleged relationship with a teenage girl will be held without bond, a judge ruled Wednesday morning.
Despite a public defender’s concerns that Curlon Edwards would be in danger while incarcerated, Baltimore City District Judge Darren Kadish ordered the officer to remain in custody.
Edwards, 34, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of rape, felony assault and three misdemeanors. The Baltimore Police Department hired him in 2023.
According to charging documents, a 16-year-old girl told police that her “boyfriend” had placed her in a chokehold during an argument. He strangled her until she briefly lost consciousness, police said.
Authorities said that after having sex with the teenager, Edwards was looking for “evidence of infidelity.”
Edwards is suspended without pay, according to a police statement. The department’s Public Integrity Division will be working with the city’s State’s Attorney’s Office on the “ongoing investigation,” police said.
Edwards’ next court hearing is scheduled for July 31.
