Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.
Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Jay Wilkerson, Gilman, lacrosse
The senior attackman totaled nine goals and four assists to lead the No. 10 Greyhounds (6-2) to two wins last week. In Tuesday’s 15-8 win over Ohio power St. Ignatius, Wilkerson finished with four goals and two assists. On Friday, he had five goals and two assists as Gilman opened play in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference with a 25-7 win over John Carroll. A Providence commit and captain, Wilkerson has 22 goals and 16 assists on the season.
Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Alex Carroll, Manchester Valley, softball
In a week cut short by the weather, the senior third baseman made the most of her time in two wins on Saturday. The Mavericks piled up 39 runs in wins over Aberdeen (27-1) and Carroll County rival South Carroll (12-5) with Carroll going 6-for-8 at the plate with four RBIs, four runs and three doubles. With the Mavericks off to a 4-1 start, Carroll is batting .500 has a .938 fielding percentage playing third base.
