Kevin Sumlin is reportedly back in the college football world after more than a two-year hiatus.
Maryland is expected to hire Sumlin as its tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. The 58-year-old Sumlin spent last year as the head coach and general manager of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.
Sumlin was 3-7 in his one season with the Gamblers. He last coached collegiately at the University of Arizona, which fired him after the 2020 season.
Sumlin went just 9-20 in his time at Arizona, but was a combined 86-43 in 10 seasons at Houston and Texas A&M.
After leading the Cougars to two double-digit win seasons and three bowl games in four years from 2008-11, Sumlin went 11-2 in his first campaign at A&M, finishing fifth in the final polls for 2012.
However, despite posting five ensuing winning seasons, Sumlin never again won more than nine games in one year, which led to his dismissal following the 2017 regular season finale.
Sumlin also has offensive coordinator experience, having filled that role at Texas A&M in 2002 and having also served as the co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2006-07.
