Democrats looks to regroup after tough election

November 19, 2024 by The Baltimore Sun

Democratic infighting continues as the party struggles to regroup following a disastrous 2024 election cycle.

Late-night comedian and host Bill Maher criticized Democrats as fallout from November’s election losses continues.

“I will conclude by saying the reason I’m so mad at the Democrats is because as a voter the issues that were important to me were democracy and the environment and now there’s no one to champion or defend either of them because you with your aggressively anti-common sense agenda and s***** exclusionary attitude blew it,” Maher said on his “Real Time with Bill Maher” program.

The blame game within the party has centered on issues ranging from failing to address economic strain on Americans to embracing culture war topics. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., has faced mounting criticism for saying Democrats spend “too much time trying not to offend anyone,” referring to his comments about not wanting his daughters to compete against biological males in women’s sports. Donald Trump and other Republicans heavily emphasized transgender issues during the final weeks of the campaign.

“The backlash I’ve received for even raising the issue proves my point, that we have trouble as a party just simply having discussions about these complicated issues. And we need to,” Moulton told CBS News last week, defending his remarks.

Over the weekend, progressive protesters gathered near Moulton’s Salem office for a Neighbors Against Hate rally.

Democrats have yet to reach a consensus on “what went wrong” after losing the presidency and control of Congress. Some party members warn that the path forward could be difficult if the focus remains on outrage rather than clear messaging.

“It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, and if we’re having meltdowns every tweet, every appointment, all those things. It’s gonna be four years,” said Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who lost his re-election bid, offered simpler advice for the party. He urged Democrats to focus on the American worker and rebuild trust as more working-class voters appear to be moving toward President-elect Donald Trump.
