The college football world was disappointed to learn the news on Monday night.
“Sad,” a fan wrote. “Always thought Sumlin really needed a year or two off after A&M to get his health in order, as he did not seem particularly well at the end there. Instead, he rushed into taking the Arizona job.”

After spending nearly two decades as a college football assistant, Sumlin landed his first head coaching job with Houston in 2008. He led the Cougars to a 12-1 record in his fourth and final season before going to Texas A&M.
Sumlin went 51-26 in six seasons with the Aggies. The 2012 SEC Coach of the Year led Johnny Manziel to a Heisman campaign in his first year.
Following a 7-5 season, Texas A&M fired Sumlin in 2017, replacing him with Jimbo Fisher. Sumlin spent three years as Arizona’s head coach and led the USFL’s Houston Gamblers in 2022 before joining Maryland’s staff this season.
The Terrapins scored 38.6 points per game during a 5-0 start before suffering consecutive losses to Ohio State and Illinois. Sumlin’s arrest occurred during a bye week for the Big Ten team.
Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, the second-degree misdemeanor charge carries a maximum jail sentence of 60 days.
