Former Arizona and Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin is reportedly returning to college football.
According to multiple reports, Sumlin has been hired as Maryland’s co-offensive coordinator. He’ll also be the team’s tight ends coach.
Sumlin has been around the block to say the least. The veteran coach had stints at Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, Purdue, Oklahoma and Houston among others.
As a head coach, Sumlin has a 95-63 career record. He had success at Houston and Texas A&M, but failed to elevate Arizona’s program.
So far, the reactions to Sumlin joining Maryland’s coaching staff have been mixed.
“Oh no,” one fan said.
“Let’s all use this time to take a moment of silence for the defensive coordinators in the Big Ten,” another fan wrote. “They are absolutely in trouble. Sumlin coming.”
“The excitement in the tweets cracks me up,” Jason Scheer of WildcatAuthority.com said. “He ruined Arizona football and started with Khalil Tate, so have fun.”
“I have questions,” JP Acosta of SB Nation tweeted.
Sumlin will add a ton of experience to Maryland’s staff, there’s no doubt about it.
However, there’s no guarantee that Sumlin will give Maryland a significant boost on the offensive side of the football. At the very least, he’ll need to prove himself again.
