A double-fatal crash Sunday on Interstate 70 in New Market led to the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes between Route 75 and Route 27, Maryland State Police said.
Frederick County troopers were dispatched around 4:10 p.m. to the crash that was reported to be near Exit 62 on I-70.
Initial investigation revealed that a driver of a BMW SUV traveling westbound rear-ended a box truck. This caused the box truck to travel across the center median and strike a tractor-trailer that was traveling eastbound, authorities reported.
“Both the box truck and tractor trainer were propelled into the wood line adjacent to eastbound I-70 and caught fire,” according to Maryland State Police.
The drivers of both vehicles were flown to Shock Trauma.
There were two passengers inside the box truck who were both pronounced deceased on the scene, officials said. Their identities were not released.
The driver of the BMW remained on scene and refused medical treatment, officials said. Two passengers of the BMW were transported by ground to a local hospital.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating this incident.
