Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Friday, Dec. 13.
Girls basketball
Chesapeake-AA 49, Glen Burnie 41: Kendall Kotofski and Kiery Matkins each scored 10 points and passed off four assists to lead the host Cougars (3-0) over the Gophers (1-2). Additionally, Kotofski had 10 rebounds. Shamaree Johnson had a game-high 15 points and Makayla Jones had nine points for Glen Burnie.
Southern 35, Severn Run 34: The Bulldogs slipped by in a “thriller,” coach Beth Tompkins said. Huntyr Marks recorded 12 points while La’Ren Watkins had eight.
Annapolis 57, Meade 39: The host Panthers (3-0) beat the Mustangs (2-1). Annapolis was led by McKenzie Fuller (16 points), freshman Melody Cordua (15 points), Catherine King (13 points), Audrey Skinner (8 points) and Lindsey Lyman (5 points, 8 rebounds).
Old Mill 52, Arundel 31: The host Patriots opened the second half with a 10-3 run and beat the Wildcats.
Hammond 52, Westminster 45: Maddy Gassman scored 14 points, but the Owls fell to the reigning 2A state champion Golden Bears. Brinley Boag added points for Westminster and Emma Jones finished with seven.
Aberdeen 57, Joppatowne 22: Nyjah Harris nearly hit a quadruple-double, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 13 steals and nine assists to lead the Eagles (3-0) past the host Mariners (1-3). Zoe Smith and Marissa Heil-Coleman each had 11 points and four rebounds for Aberdeen. The Eagles had a team total of 28 steals and 28 rebounds.
C. Milton Wright 35, Harford Tech 23: Sam Wolfkill tallied a double-double to lead the Mustangs. She finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Carley Jehnert led with 11 points and collected three steals. Clara Smith had seven points for the Cobras. Delaney Klaus had six rebounds.
Notre Dame Prep 36, Fallston 33. In the loss, Fallston was led by Brooke Bolesta with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Sara Gent, Jadin Woods and Natalie Wirth all added six points.
South Carroll 46 Century 39: The host Cavaliers (2-1) beat the Knights (1-1). South Carroll was led by Harley McKee (13 points), Leah Miller (11 points, 14 rebounds) and Charlotte Harrington (9 points, 10 rebounds).
Wilde Lake 38, Garrison Forest 29: The Wildecats (2-1) earned a nonconference win. Freshman Maggie Shidle led the way with 15 points, while Quinn Corkeron added nine points.
Boys basketball
Joppatowne 67, Patapsco 47: Kishann Smith scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Mariners (4-1) over the host Patriots (0-4). Smith also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Anthony Council had 13 points and five assists.
Mount Carmel 56, Archbishop Curley 21: Harmony Okojie (15 points) and Antwan Williams (14 points) led the Cougars (8-1) past the host Friars (2-3). Samartine Hill scored eight points and Mazari Browne had seven points for Mount Carmel.
South River 55, Broadneck 43: Jamie Finn scored 25 points, including seven 3-pointers to lead the Seahawks (3-0) over the host Bruins (3-1). Other standouts for South River were Jaden McDuffie (10 points, 17 rebounds, 7 blocks) and Jonah Hall (8 points).
Meade 82, Annapolis 54: Keon Scott’s 18 points, seven assists and five steals led the way to the Mustangs’ first win (1-2). Two other players netted double figures — Lucaya Baldridge, with 14 points and 6 rebounds, and Ashton Turman, with 13 points and four assists.
Glen Burnie 66, Chesapeake 42: Coach Mike Rudd hit his 400th career win, thanks to four players spurring the victory with double figures. Chris Maddox had 14 points. Amiri Powell (seven rebounds) and CJ Jones each netted 11 points while Jordan Dailey had 10.
St. Mary’s 60, Gilman 59: The Saints were saved by Gavin Johnson (eight points), who scored the go-ahead free throw with one second on the clock. Noah Cerny tallied 17 points, followed by James DiBitteto (15 points), Tyler Tillman (9 points) and Jovanni Hall (8 points).
Southern 72, Severn Run 56: Sophomore Daniel Lewis spearheaded the Bulldogs’ win with 18 points. Sophomore Bryson Mims and junior Wyatt Brady each registered a dozen points while senior Ethan Sheffey had 10. For the Wolves, Rico Gough made 13 points.
Archbishop Spalding 64, Lane Tech 62: The Cavaliers improved to 6-1 and coach Josh Pratt earned his 100th win as Spalding’s coach in the first round of the Gonzaga DC Classic tournament. Kam Carter and TJ Moultrie each recorded 22 points.
Old Mill 59, Arundel 51: In the loss, the Wildcats were led by Samson Anjorin had 18 points while Javeon Reed and Ellis Johnson had 9 points each.
Westminster 57, Liberty 56: The visiting Owls (1-2) trailed by two to start the fourth quarter, but took the lead and held on to win. Paul Burgee led Westminster with 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and Shae Greenwood had 10 points and six rebounds.
Gerstell 64, St. John’s Catholic Prep 53: Victor Gray scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Falcons (7-2, 1-0 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference Red Division) over the Vikings (0-4, 0-1). Gerstell got double-digit scoring from Emre Tari (14 points) and Colin Toms (12 points). Mamadou Sako led St. John’s with 14 points. The victory was the fifth straight.
Dulaney 77, Indian Creek 63: The Lions won the home opener, moving to 3-0 overall. Drew Ranck finished with a double-double, matching his 11 points with 11 rebounds. He also blocked two shots. Kelan Dennis had another big game with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Chase Huber added 15 points, nine assists and five rebounds.
