Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Thursday, May 1.
Girls lacrosse
Towson 11, Urbana 9: The host Generals trailed by a goal in the first half before outscoring the Hawks, 7-4, in the second half to win. Towson was led by Finlay Harmon with five goals and eight draw controls. Allie Kennedy scored twice and Leila Franklin won seven draws.
Manchester Valley 20, Hereford 1: Emma Penczek set a Carroll County league record and the host Mavericks rolled past the Bulls. Penzek scored seven goals and set the career goals scored record, 308, surpassing the previous record holder Katie Schwarzmann (2010). Penczek also had four assists. Other standouts for Manchester Valley included: Taylor Fique (3 goals, 1 assist, 9 draw controls), Addison Meyer (3 goals) and Carolyn Lowe (2 goals, 4 assists).
Francis Scott Key 17, Smithsburg 3: The host Eagles beat the Leopards. FSK was led by Ciannah Sinnnott (5 goals, 1 assist), Brooke Owings (4 goals), Jena Stambaugh (3 goals, 4 assists, 3 draw controls) and Lily Bertier (1 goal, 7 draw controls).
Liberty 12, Dulaney 11, OT: Visiting Liberty beat Dulaney with Sophia Carpenetti (2 goals) netting the overtime winner. Abby Solarczyk had four goals for Liberty. Other standouts for Liberty included: Kourtney Goff (2 goals), Ellie Kachura (2 goals), Mady Smith (1 goal, 4 assists) and Jordyn Ott (1 goal).
South Carroll 16, Catoctin 2: Sophia DeLuca made five saves and the visiting Cavaliers (11-3) beat the Cougars. Nine players for South Carroll scored including Leah Miller, Riley Niles and Charlotte Harrington each with a hat trick. Other notables for the Cavaliers included: Ella Boyce (2 goals), Ava Krantz (1 goal, 4 assists) and Kaeden McCarthy (2 assists).
St. Paul’s 9, John Carroll 4: The third-seeded Gators (12-3) took a 5-0 lead in the first half and beat the sixth-seeded Patriots (6-9) in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference quarterfinal. Towson-bound Annie Minoglio scored two goals and recorded her 100th career point for John Carroll. St. Paul’s advances to Tuesday’s semifinal at Archbishop Spalding.
Patterson Mill 11, Rising Sun 7: Jaya Ramnhart made 10 saves and the host Huskies beat the Tigers. Patterson Mill was led by Sam Chittum (3 goals, 1 assist, 7 draw controls), Rylie Madsen (3 goals), Emily Tapley (2 goals, 1 assist), Maddie Tunney (2 goals) and Gabby Eraso (1 goal, 5 draw controls).
Boys lacrosse
Hereford 11, Manchester Valley 8: The Bulls grinded out the road nonconference win. Ian Smith paced the offense with four goals. Griffin Walter set it up with three assists. On the other end of the field, Zach Baker caused five turnovers, Katahdin McClure caused three, as did Luke Barnett, who also made nine saves in goal. For the Mavericks, Gavin Reid had three goals and two assists. Connor Fique and Owen Hackler each added two goals.
Baseball
Patterson Mill 16, Rising Sun 6: The host Huskies scored seven runs in the second inning and beat the Tigers. Brycen Hunter went three innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three for the win. Hunter had a double, John Teal had a triple and Kevin Hardisky had a home run for Patterson Mill.
C. Milton Wright 5, Bel Air 1: The visiting Mustangs (11-8) beat the Bobcats (7-11).
Reservoir 9, Howard 1: The Gators (15-1) continued to roll with another dominant win. Matt Russell pitched a complete game, while Gavin Metrick and Eamon O’Brien led the offense, each with multiple hits.
Marriotts Ridge 16, Guilford Park 7: The Mustangs (9-10, 6-2 Summit Division) bounced back from a two-game losing streak. Spencer Grams was 3-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Anthony Devito had four RBIs and Aiden Hlavaty and Nick Brown both had 2 RBIs. For Guilford Park (0-15, 0-7 Summit), Aiden Clever and Brendan Streets each had two hits and Sean Thomas had a triple and an RBI.
Randallstown 6, Pikesville 5: The Rams (11-4) exploded for five runs in the sixth inning sparked by a two-run double by Joshua White. Terence Venable picks up the win going six innings with three strikeouts. walks. Antuan Oliver got the save and Chris McLeod led the Rams with three hits.
Eastern Tech 3, Kenwood 2 (8 innings): The host Mavericks tied the score 2-2 in the sixth inning and scored the winning run in the eighth inning.
Carver A&T 14, Owings Mills 4: The visiting Wildcats beat the Eagles. Ben Arneklev worked 6 ½ innings, gave up four runs on three hits and struck out 11 for the win. Offensively, Arneklev went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple and six stolen bases. Trevor Schnirel had five stolen bases and Lewy Pusateri had four stolen bases for Carver A&T.
Softball
Catonsville 8, Sparrows Point 2: The visiting Comets scored eight runs in the second inning and beat the Pointers. Kaia Gross went seven innings in the circle, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out four for the win. Emily Meiller (3-for-4) had a double, three RBIs and a run scored for Catonsville.
Perry Hall 14, Eastern Tech 10: The Gators won a wild one in nine innings. The teams were tied at 6 after seven innings. Each scored four runs in the eighth and the Gators added four more in the ninth, but shut down the Mavericks in the bottom half. Shalimar Lopez and Addison Dunlap each drove in two runs to lead the win.
Mount de Sales 3, John Carroll 2: The Sailors (10-04, 8-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) beat the Patriots (10-6, 5-5). The win was the third straight.
Howard 13, Reservoir 3: The Lions (11-6-1) won their second game in a row and fourth in the last games. Maleah Hannie went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Both Kiersten Black and Hadley Coleman homered, while Olivia Coleman had two hits, including a double. For Reservoir (10-5), Abbie Frisvold hit a two-run home run.
Havre de Grace 7, North East 5: The visiting Warriors took a 7-1 lead and held off a late rally by the Indians. Havre de Grace was led by Lily Jones (2-for-4) with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, Lillia Dalton (2-for-4) had two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, Kinsey Mentzer (2-for-4) had a home run, a run scored and an RBI and Jalyyn Ludd (2-for-3) had a double, a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
Boys tennis
Howard 3, Reservoir 2: The Lions’ Daniel Au and Mihir Malvankar won 8-4 and 8-2 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Shaunak Chittimalla and Krish Shroff sealed the match at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 win. For Reservoir, Adam Hunt and Sanath Simhadri and Adam Brown and Srivedanth Battalapalli won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Howard advanced to 13-3 on the season.
Girls tennis
Howard 3, Reservoir 2: Howard’s doubles pairings of Medha Gaddam and Charlotte Harvey, Madeline Williams and Leah Sellers as well Eve Tang and Ramaya Gajula didn’t surrender a game in their matches. Howard moves to 13-1 on the season. For Reservoir, Cassandra Dragulescu and Amaya Ta won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles 8-0 and 8-6, respectively.
