On Wednesday, a report came out suggesting that Rick Pitino could be the next basketball coach for the University of Maryland. Moments ago, the Iona head coach shared his thoughts on that potential move.
Pitino made it clear that he will not be Maryland’s next coach. That’s because he’s currently committed to his players at Iona.
“The University of Maryland is one of the premier institutions of higher learning,” Pitino tweeted on Thursday morning. “It’s basketball program can be among the nation’s best. I hope they find the next great Gary Williams. I love coaching at Iona, and I’m totally committed to my players. It will not be me.”

In February, it was announced that Pitino is discussing a lifetime contract with Iona. The veteran coach has been on good terms with the program ever since he first arrived there.
Pitino showcased his value in his first year at Iona, leading the Gaels to the NCAA tournament.
So far this year, Iona is 23-5. If the Gaels keep up their winning ways, they’ll be tournament-bound once again.
As for Maryland, it’ll be busy this offseason searching for a long-term answer at head coach.
