The Terps look to capture their third straight victory.

After winning a crucial weekend series at home, Maryland baseball takes a 46-mile road trip to Towson.

The Terps head into the midweek contest with the 39th best rating percentage index — which measures a team’s wins, loses and strength of schedule — in the country, significantly higher than Towson’s 260.

Tuesday’s game will begin at 3 p.m. and air on FloBaseball. Maryland Baseball Network will have the radio feed.

Towson Tigers (10-33, 3-15 CAA)

Towson faces Maryland for the first time since 2022, when it lost 26-8. The Tigers have not had a great 2024 season, sitting in last place in the Coastal Athletic Association.

Towson’s performance at John B. Schuerholz Park has been significantly stronger compared to its away games, though, boasting an 8-12 record at home and a 1-20 record on the road.

Hitters to watch

Elijah Dickerson, redshirt senior outfielder/first baseman, No. 12 — Dickerson leads the Tigers with a .335 batting average and a .870 OPS in 2024. He has two home runs and 25 RBIs in 43 games this season.

Bryce Frederick, redshirt senior utility player, No. 26 — Frederick leads Towson with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 2024. He has a .261 batting average and a .782 OPS in 43 games this season.

Taye Robinson, redshirt freshman infielder, No. 7 — Robinson has worked a team-high 23 walks this season, and his .282 batting average is second-best. He has a .724 OPS and 19 RBIs this season.

Pitchers to watch

Matt Lynch, sophomore left-hander, No. 18 — Lynch pitches in most midweeks for Towson and started last week against UMBC. This season, he has a 4.02 ERA in 31 ⅓ innings through 15 mound appearances and three starts.

Nick Karls, redshirt freshman right-hander, No. 37 — Karls has made a number of appearances, usually throwing roughly one inning. He has a 0-1 record with a 10.20 ERA in 15 innings this season through 12 appearances.

Brandon Jung, sophomore right-hander, No. 16 — Jung is a midweek frequent for Towson. In 15 appearances and 16 ⅔ innings pitched, he has a 1-1 record with a 4.86 ERA.

Strength

Strikeouts. Towson pitching has punched out 298 opponents in 43 games this season, amounting to 6.93 strikeouts per game. In comparison, its opponents have only struck out 272 batters.

Weakness

Offense. The Tigers trail their opponents in every single offensive statistic. Opponents have boasted a better batting average than Towson (.297 to .252) and scored more runs (374 to 203). As well, its opponents have hit 42 home runs, while Towson has racked up just 19.

Three things to know

1. Who will start? For the second straight midweek, it is uncertain who will be on the mound for Maryland. Evan Smith took the mound last week and went 2 ⅓ innings, while Kenny Lippman and Logan Berrier finished the job. Each pitched significant innings on Saturday and Sunday, making it unlikely they will grace the field on Tuesday. Meade Johnson, who was the midweek starter two weeks ago at Delaware, remains a possibility for the Terps.

2. Will the offense stay hot? Maryland put up 20 runs over its last two games and revitalized itself offensively. The Terps will look to keep that narrative going on Tuesday.

3. Maryland’s regional status. Currently ranked No. 39 in RPI, the Terps face a crucial juncture, as the top 50 teams in RPI typically secure spots in the NCAA tournament regional. A defeat against a team as lowly ranked as Towson could severely dent Maryland’s prospects of advancing to a regional.
