The Terps welcome a local rival to College Park.

Maryland baseball (10-10, 1-2 Big Ten) looks to bounce back against Georgetown Tuesday after another disappointing series over the weekend.

The Terps are coming off another nonconference series loss on the road to USF, despite winning game one on Friday.

Maryland returns home to face Georgetown at 4:00 p.m., a team on a four-game losing streak. The Terps look to gain some momentum before their weekend trip to face new Big Ten opponent Washington.

Tuesday’s game will stream on Big Ten Plus.

Georgetown Hoyas (7-13, 0-0 Big East)

2024 record: 36-21, 13-7 Big East

Since hiring head coach Edwin Thompson in 2020, Georgetown has had its most successful stint in program history. After a disappointing 2021 season, the Hoyas reached the Big East Tournament championship game in 2022 and have maintained similar success.

Thompson has led the Hoyas to 30-plus wins in three straight seasons, including 36 wins in 2024, breaking many program records along the way.

Hitters to watch

Ashtin Gilo, sophomore outfielder, No. 14 — After an impressive freshman season in limited playing time, Gilo leads the team in many hitting categories, including batting average (.370), OPS (1.111), slugging percentage (.611) and on-base percentage (.500).

Owen Carapellotti, senior catcher, No. 41 — The senior has been the team’s leading power bat for the past two seasons. Carapellotti led the team with 14 home runs last season, and has hit four in 16 games this year.

Kavi Caster, graduate outfielder, No. 42 — Caster is the Hoyas’ best returning hitter, upping his batting average to .278 and leading the team in doubles (6), RBIs (20) and total bases (34) in 19 games.

Pitchers to watch

Johan Franco, sophomore right-handed pitcher, No. 13 — Franco has been the regular midweek starter for the Hoyas in 2025. He has a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings of work and earned his first career win on March 11th against Penn State.

Marshall Whitmer, senior left-handed pitcher, No. 8 — Whitmer has been a staple in the Hoyas’ midweek bullpen this season. He has appeared in 11 total games, recording a 5.29 ERA in 17 innings.

Strength

Balanced offense. Five different Hoyas are tied for the team lead of 20 hits, while another has 19.

Weakness

Pitching depth. Starters Andrew Williams and JT Raab have been reliable arms for the Hoyas. However, no other pitcher with over 10 innings pitched has an ERA below four — many are above seven.

Three things to watch

1. Will Jake Yeager start? The highly touted freshman has been the Terps’ midweek starter this season, but with his success and more struggles from weekend starters, head coach Matt Swope might switch around the rotation.

2. Opportunities for offense. Georgetown’s 6.58 team ERA, a near two-run increase from last season, looks appetizing for Maryland’s top offense.

3. Bounce back. Yet to win a series this season, Maryland is coming off another disappointing road trip, needing to get back in the win column against a struggling Georgetown team.
