Maryland Continues Disappointing Season With a Loss to Iowa

November 24, 2024 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Maryland Terrapins have lost four games in a row after falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes 29-13 on Saturday afternoon.

The Terps came to the Shell for one last home game of the 2024 season, with Iowa being 6.5-point favorites. This was a chaotic outing for the Terrapins, switching quarterbacks twice between starter Billy Edwards Jr. and backup redshirt sophomore MJ Morris. Edwards came into the game with an injury to his right throwing hand but attempted to play through it. He was removed from the game in the first half but re-entered in the third quarter. However, after taking a red-zone hit in the third quarter, Edwards was removed again, and replaced by Morris for the remainder of the game.

Despite getting to test out two quarterbacks against the Hawkeyes, Maryland still generated limited offensive movement. Iowa had a 16-0 lead until the third quarter, with Edwards and Morris only combining for 129 passing yards. Maryland’s first score of the game was off a Tai Felton touchdown in the third, which resulted in a failed two-point attempt. Felton and Morris connected again in the fourth quarter for Maryland’s last score of the game, receiving six catches for 57 yards, capping Maryland’s points at an underwhelming 13. Felton, a projected day-two pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, played his last home game for the Terrapins, going out by carrying the Terrapin offense at Secu one final time.

The Hawkeyes controlled the offensive motion of the game, moving for 344 total yards compared to the Terp’s 227. Of Iowa’s total yardage, 268 yards were off rushing plays. Hawkeye running back Kaleb Johnson totaled 35 carries, 164 yards, and one touchdown, which was an offensive force the Terps failed to contain. Iowa’s defense also had their key moments, with all hopes of a Terrapin comeback being squashed in the fourth quarter with an interception by cornerback TJ Hall, on a long pass intended for Kaden Prather.

The Terps have now lost bowl game eligibility, falling to 4-7 on the season, and being 1-7 in conference play. Maryland travels to Beaver Stadium next weekend for their final game of the 2024 season against Penn State.
