Maryland head coach Mike Locksley addressed co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin’s arrest.
Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Florida while the Terrapins were off last weekend. The 59-year-old was released after posting bond.
During Tuesday’s press conference, Locksley confirmed that Sumlin is currently away from the team. He didn’t specify how the program plans to handle the situation.
“We’re aware of the charges,” Locksley said (h/t On3). “It’s disappointing. As coaches, we have to set the example and model the behavior that we want [from] our players. And we take it very seriously. At the same time, I will also say, he’s part of our football family and we’re going to support Kevin. To me, it’s a personnel issue that we’ll let the personnel and kind of what we’ve done in the past dictate how things play out.”
Mike Locksley says that Kevin Sumlin’s arrest was “disappointing” and didn’t set a good example, but that the team is going to support him.
He added that Sumlin will not be with the team this week. Says that there will be disciplinary action.

Sumlin could have his driver’s license suspended for at least a year after allegedly refusing a breathalyzer test. He faces up to 60 days in jail and/or a $500 fine for the second-degree misdemeanor charge.
Sumlin joined Locksley’s staff this season after coaching the USFL’s Houston Gamblers last year. He tallied 95 wins over 13 seasons as a college head coach for Houston, Texas A&M, and Arizona.
Maryland has scored 33.4 points per game amid a 5-2 start. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is averaging 275.1 yards per game for the Terrapins.
Sumlin presumably won’t be present when Maryland plays at Northwestern this Saturday.
