Two Terps made all-conference teams.
No. 11 Maryland men’s basketball center Derik Queen was selected to the All-Big Ten first team by the conference’s coaches, it was announced by the league Tuesday. The last Maryland freshman to make the first team was Melo Trimble in 2014-15.
He was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, making him the first-ever Terp to earn the honor.
The Terps saw two other players earn conference honors as well — Ja’Kobi Gillespie earned third team honors, while Julian Reese was named an honorable mention. Selton Miguel was also selected as Maryland’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Gillespie started immediately for Maryland after transferring in from Belmont, where he averaged 17.2 points per game on 56% shooting his sophomore year. The 6-foot-1 point guard has stood out since the first contest, and has started every game for the Terps this season.
Gillespie led Maryland in assists per game (4.7) and was second to only Queen in points per game (14.9). He was also a solid marksman from deep, shooting 41.5% from three with 76 makes, the most on the team. His 2.5 makes per game ranks first in the conference.
Gillespie has scored fewer than 10 points just six times all year, most recently in the Terps’ loss to Michigan State. He has seen quite a few highs as well, including a stellar 27-point outing against then-No. 22 UCLA. He also impressed with a 17-point, 11-assist double-double against Syracuse.
Gillespie’s 87.2% mark from the free-throw line ranks 13th in the conference. He’s also tied for third in the conference with 1.9 steals per game.
Meanwhile, this is Reese’s third consecutive season he has been named an All-Big Ten honorable mention. He paced the Terps in rebounds per game with 9.3, which ranked second in the conference. A defensive stalwart, Reese also ranked third in the conference with 1.6 blocks per game. He had a season-high four rejections against Nebraska.
Reese averaged 13.2 points per game this season, which was the fourth-most on the team. He scored a season-high 27 points to go with 17 rebounds against Illinois. His 14 double-doubles were the most in the conference and 12th-most in the country.
