Maryland Terrapins Volleyball was back in action Wednesday night against Big 10 rival, Rutgers at the Jersey Mike’s arena in Point Pleasant, NJ. Maryland has dominated Rutgers of late, winning 11 of the previous 15 match-ups.
The Terps took a 2-set lead on the Scarlet Knights, who lost their starting center, Georgia Lee, early in the match. Lee suffered a rolled ankle in the first set and was sidelined for the remainder of play.
The Scarlet Knights kept things competitive-taking the 3rd set, by a score of 25-15. Senior Sam Csire, who recently joined Maryland’s 1000 Kill Club, led the 4th set charge. The Terps took the lead and never looked back. Even with a strong performance during the final set of the match, Head Coach Adam Hughes needed to use a challenge on the squad’s 18th point, which was a shot by Annapolis native, Laila Ivey. The initial call on the court was that Ivey’s shot landed out of bounds. The official review showed that Rutgers’ blockers touched the ball-giving Maryland the point and squashing a Scarlet Knights rally. Sam Csire scored the match point, on the Terps’ second attempt.
The 3-1 victory was Maryland Volleyball’s first ever Big-10 road opening win. They improve to 12-3 on the season overall and are 2-1 in conference play. The Terps take the court again Friday, October 6th in a showdown against Minnesota.
