The Terps host an in-state nonconference opponent after their Big Ten opener.

Maryland women’s basketball pushed past Northwestern on Sunday. The Terps held just a three-point advantage at halftime, but won comfortably in the end, 71-58.

Shyanne Sellers had one of her best games of the season, finishing with 13 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, while Allie Kubek found success in the paint, running the pick-and-roll to the tune of a team-high 17 points.

Maryland will host Towson in its penultimate nonconference game of the season at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The game will stream on Big Ten Plus.

Towson Tigers (7-1, 0-0 CAA)

2022 record: 21-12, 13-5 CAA

Laura Harper won a national championship with Maryland as a player, and she’s led Towson to a strong start in her second season as its head coach.

Last year, the Tigers recorded their third-highest single-season win total in program history. They’re off to an even better start this season, but will face their toughest opponent yet on Tuesday.

Players to know

Patricia Anumgba, junior guard, 5-foot-7, No. 24 — Anumgba has made an immediate impact in her first season with the Tigers. She leads the team with 14.1 points per game and ranks second with 20 steals.

Kylie Kornegay-Lucas, redshirt senior guard, 5-foot-10, No. 15 — The reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Year and All-CAA first-team selection is averaging 13.5 points per game while leading the team in both rebounds (7.9) and assists (4.1) per game.

Quinzia Fulmore, junior forward, 6-foot-3, No. 34 — Fulmore has continued her solid play from last season, averaging over 10 points and five rebounds per game this season. The junior put up a 15-point double-double in Towson’s recent game against American U.

Strength

Ball security. The Tigers are good at not wasting possessions. The team has the second-best turnover margin in the CAA and forces the second-most turnovers per game in the conference at 19 per game.

Weakness

Defense. It seems like every time an opponent faces the Tigers, they have a good night shooting the basketball. Towson’s opponents have an average field goal percentage of 43.4%, the second-worst mark in the CAA. Towson is also one of four teams in its conference to have already allowed over 200 made field goals this season.

Three things to watch

1. Can the Terps pick it up from three? Maryland started the season with Brinae Alexander as the team’s only real threat from long range, but four other players on the roster are currently shooting over 30% from behind the arc. If Maryland can knock down perimeter shots, it can open up other facets of its offense.

2. Kubek’s old team. Last year, the redshirt junior forward was injured and unable to play. On Tuesday, Kubek will get to play her former school. The last season she played as a Tiger, she made the All-CAA third team.

3. Another hot nonconference opponent. Two games ago, George Mason came into XFINITY Center undefeated team and left with a loss. Towson enters Tuesday’s game with a 7-1 record, marking another difficult nonconference test for the Terps.
