Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie is the mayor-elect of San Francisco and shared his plans to quickly get to work once in office.
Lurie held his first speech as mayor-elect on Friday. On Thursday evening, London Breed, the city’s first Black female mayor, conceded the race.
“Our mandate is clear: deliver clean and safe streets, address our drug and behavioral health crisis, shake up a corrupt bureaucracy, build housing that our neighbors can afford, support our hardworking small businesses, and revitalize our downtown,” Lurie shared on X.
With Breed trailing in the count, she promised a smooth transition as Lurie takes over the role of mayor.
“Yesterday, I received a gracious call from Mayor London Breed, who offered her assistance during this transition. We’re both committed to working together to prepare for the hard work ahead,” Lurie wrote on X.
In a brief press conference, Lurie shared plans to declare a state of emergency on fentanyl on his first day in office in January, according to The New York Times.
Lurie shared his intention to shut down “open-air fentanyl markets” in the city and noted his disagreements with President-elect Donald Trump, while also assuring that it will not get in his way of helping the city.
According to the Times, fentanyl is responsible for most of the 3,300 drug deaths reported in San Francisco since 2020.
Lurie spent nearly $9 million of his own money on his bid for mayor. It will be his first role in public office.
