Marchiano served as interim head coach for five games this season.

Michael Marchiano was named the next head coach of Maryland women’s soccer Wednesday, Maryland Athletics announced.

Marchiano led the Terps to a 1-3-1 record in five Big Ten games as interim head coach, after previous head coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer parted ways with the program on Oct. 10. Maryland’s 2-0 win over Nebraska under Marchino’s leadership snapped a 721-day scoreless streak in conference play.

Maryland finished the year 4-10-5, with a 1-8-2 Big Ten record.

Marchiano won two national championships as a player with Maryland men’s soccer in his four years as a midfielder from 2005 to 2008, and was a team captain for his final two seasons.

“It is a tremendous honor to be named the head coach of the Maryland women’s soccer program,” Marchiano said in a release. “The connection I have with this university runs deep and I am super excited to lead our women’s program.”

Marchiano joined the program in November 2023, serving as an assistant under Ryan Nemzer. After Ryan Nemzer’s departure, the athletics department conducted a national search for a replacement, but landed on Marchiano.

“Maryland soccer is in Mike’s blood, and we are thrilled to have him leading our women’s soccer program,” Maryland athletics director Damon Evans said in the release. “Mike has tremendous passion for his alma mater and has a winning pedigree, winning multiple national championships as a player for our men’s program.”

Prior to his return to College Park, Marchiano spent three years as the head coach of Drexel men’s soccer and coached Loyola Blakefield High School’s varsity soccer team for a season. Before his time at Drexel, Marchiano was an assistant coach for Loyola (Md.) men’s soccer for six seasons and Army men’s soccer for two seasons.

“He is a gifted coach and the perfect person to entrust with the challenge of rebuilding Maryland women’s soccer to where it belongs, among the nation’s elite,” Maryland men’s soccer head coach Sasho Cirovski said in the release. “His passion and pride in representing the Maryland colors will inspire all of his players, excite the fan base and attract the top recruits to College Park.”
