This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.
Although he’s on pace for a slight step back from last year’s career-best production, Kevin Huerter has put together the best start to the season of the five former Maryland men’s basketball players in the NBA.
The Sacramento Kings guard has put forth per-game averages of 12.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists. The most impressive stretch of his season thus far came in mid-November, when he scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games.
Huerter missed a game with a finger sprain, but returned on Monday.
Jalen Smith has also stood out this season, averaging double-digit points (10.3) and 5.5 rebounds per contest. He was scarily elbowed in the head last Tuesday and had to be taken to the hospital, but was able to play in the Indianapolis Pacers’ game just five days later.
Outside of Huerter and Smith, the three other Terps in the NBA haven’t stood out. Aaron Wiggins is averaging 4.5 points per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Alex Len is playing fewer than seven minutes per game for the Kings and Bruno Fernando has made only three appearances this season with the Atlanta Hawks.
