MM 12.10: Derik Queen earns second Big Ten Freshman of the Week nod

This is a Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

Maryland men’s basketball freshman Derik Queen is having one of the biggest breakout seasons in college basketball, and he’s already got the hardware to prove it.

Queen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday. It’s his second nod for the award in three weeks, and he’s the first Terp to earn multiple Freshman of the Week honors since Jalen Smith in 2018-19.

The 6-foot-10, 246-pound big man recorded double-doubles in both games across the week. He recorded 17 points, 11 rebounds and two steals in a resounding win over Ohio State before leading the Terps with both 26 points and 12 rebounds in a close road loss to No. 11 Purdue, also adding two blocks.

Queen shot 17-of-28 across the two games and made his first two 3-pointers of the season against the Boilermakers.

In other news

Three Maryland football players — redshirt sophomore cornerback Perry Fisher, redshirt junior offensive lineman Kyle Long and redshirt freshman wide receiver Ezekiel Avit — announced they will enter the transfer portal.

Maryland men’s basketball received 39 votes in the Week 6 AP Poll for an unofficial No. 37 ranking. It was an unofficial No. 44 a week prior.
