MM 12.2: Maryland men’s lacrosse hires Michael Phipps as offensive coordinator

Maryland men’s lacrosse announced the hiring of Michael Phipps as its new offensive coordinator on Thursday.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Michael Phipps back to the University of Maryland,” head coach John Tillman said in a release. “He brings great experience, strong knowledge of coaching at this level, and a deep love for the university and the tradition of the program.”

Phipps was most recently an assistant coach at Navy, where had previously spent three seasons from 2015-17. Between his stints with the Midshipmen, Phipps was part of a Georgetown staff that won four Big East tournaments and appeared in four NCAA Tournaments, posting a top-10 scoring offense nationally in three of his last four years.

As a player, Phipps was a standout attackman for the Terps. In his three years as a starter, he totaled 95 points, culminating in an All-American nod as a senior in 2007. The season after his graduation, he served as Maryland’s director of lacrosse operations.

“Coaching at my alma mater is a dream come true and I’m honored to be part of a team that gave me so much as a player,” Phipps said.

Phipps replaces former offensive coordinator Jake Bernhardt, who left to be the head coach at Colby College.
