MM 12.4: Maryland DB Corey Coley Jr. announces plans to enter transfer portal

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

Maryland cornerback Corey Coley Jr. announced his intention to enter the transfer portal Sunday on social media, one day before the portal officially opens on Dec. 4.

Coley announced his decision shortly after teammate Jaishawn Barham made the same declaration Sunday, bringing the total of Terps having declared for the portal to seven. Coley is the third defensive back to do so, joining Tamarcus Cooley and Gavin Gibson.

Coley played 387 total snaps this season, according to Pro Football Focus. In 12 games, he recorded two pass breakups, nine tackles and two run stops. Coley was a three-star recruit in the class of 2021 coming out of high school in Jacksonville, Florida.

Maryland football will play in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl against Auburn on Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Maryland men’s basketball fell to Indiana, 65-53, in its first Big Ten game of the season. Andrew Chodes had the game story and Emmett Siegel offered takeaways. Siegel and Chodes also reacted to the loss in an instant reaction episode of the Testudo Talk Podcast.

Maryland women’s basketball avoided beat George Mason on Sunday, 86-77. Ryan Alonardo recapped the game and Jack Parry had the takeaways.

Terps forward Emma Chardon will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Chardon missed nearly all of last season as well with a torn meniscus.

Maryland wrestler Jaxon Smith finished second in the 197-pound weight class at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Teammate Braxton Brown placed first at 133 pounds in the Patriot Open, held Sunday at George Mason University.

Maryland track and field opened its indoor season at the Navy Invitational and had four athletes finish first in their respective events. Chioma Njoku won the women’s weight throw, Armanie Coleman won the women’s 60-meter dash, Aaron Abedin was victorious in the men’s 400-meter dash and Kami Joi Hickson won the women’s 1000-meter race.
