This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.
Two Maryland men’s lacrosse players were selected in the 2024 Premier Lacrosse League Draft Tuesday night. Senior defenseman Ajax Zappitello was selected No. 3 overall — the second consecutive year a Maryland defenseman went No. 3 overall (Brett Makar) — by the Maryland Whipsnakes and graduate faceoff specialist Luke Wierman was selected No. 25 overall by the Denver Outlaws.
Zappitello, the 2024 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, has started in all 13 games this season, recording a team-high 20 caused turnovers, 28 ground balls and two goals. He is a two-time All-American selection and the second defenseman in program history to wear the storied No. 1 jersey.
Wierman has etched himself into the Maryland record books with what he’s accomplished over the last four years. He holds the program record for most career faceoff wins (809) and single-season faceoff wins (298). This season, Wierman has won 172 of 287 faceoffs, while tallying 94 groundballs.
