Head coach Michael Locksley also addressed the media. When asked about his Big Ten Media Day press conference and losing the locker room in 2024, his response indicated a strong focus on the future.

“Anything and everything that took place a year ago, we’ve ripped off the rearview mirror,” Locksley said. “It’s moving forward only.”

Still, Locksley reflected on the tumultuous 2024 campaign and the contemporary NIL landscape he continues to navigate.

“As the [college football] landscape has continued to evolve, we just have to be ready to pivot,” Locksley said. “I didn’t anticipate [those issues]…now that I know about it, we’ve done things and we’ve put people in positions to where I don’t feel like we’ll have to deal with those types of issues.”

“When you start paying people, they become pros,” Locksley continued. “My players are pros because they are being paid.”

Locksley mentioned that he believes the team has a solid foundation, and eyes the season as a bounce-back year. As for the quarterback battle — featuring freshman quarterback Malik Washington — Locksley is taking things slow and steady.

“[The team] will know who our quarterback is on Sunday before we start preparation for game one,” Locksley said. “[The media] will know when we walk out and the guy takes the first snap.”
