COLLEGE PARK — Ehis Etute scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Oregon women’s basketball in a 68-61 win over No. 16 Maryland on Saturday night.
The loss is Maryland’s fourth straight.
Etute shot 10 of 15 from the field and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line for the Ducks, who outscored the Terps 24-11 in the fourth quarter. Sofia Bell added 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
Oregon (17-7, 5-6 Big Ten) pulled ahead behind an 11-0 run with 2:39 remaining. Addi Mack made a layup and made two free throws to get Maryland within two with 27 seconds remaining but Oregon made 5 of 6 free throws to seal the win.
“With our limited depth, I thought they wore us out,” Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. “We have a small margin for error with the limited pieces we have. We’ve got to continue to find ways to play within each other.”
Despite Maryland holding Oregon’s two top scorers, Katie Fiso and Mia Jacobs, to eight and six respective points, Etute gave the Ducks a lift with a career performance.
The Terps (17-6, 5-6) finished the first half with a 14-0 run to lead 36-30. Oluchi Okananwa was 11 of 17 shooting and scored 27 points, including 23 in the first half. Mack added 17 points, and Saylor Poffenbarger pitched in eight rebounds.
Yarden Garzon 3-pointer to give Maryland a 36-30 halftime lead gave her 1,500 career points and extended her Big Ten-leading 3-point total to 64. But that was her only basket as she finished 1-for-5 from the field with four fouls after scoring 24 points in Wednesday’s double-overtime loss to No. 25 Washington.
After starting the season 14-0, the Terps have dropped six of their past nine games against Big Ten competition and have slipped to 10th in the 18-team standings.
“We just have to continue to stay grounded where we’re at and focus on what lies ahead,” Frese said.
